Byers, who preceded her in death in 1991. She was born March 2, 1911, a daughter of the late Odie Rhodes Akers and John Wallace Akers. Mrs. Byers was employed by the Silk Mill and Westvaco. She was also a homemaker. She was involved with the Alleghany Home Demonstration Club and she was a Girl Scout and 4-H Club leader. Mrs. Byers was a lifetime member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, where she was also a member of No.1 Circle and the Women’s Bible Sunday School Class. Mrs. Byers is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ellen Byers and Mike Taylor of Chattanooga, Tenn.; three stepsons, Joe Byers of Amelia, Gene Byers of Emporia, and Grover C. Byers, Jr. of Covington; a grandson, Michael Jason Tyalor, granddaughters Kimberly Michele Taylor Linthicum and Mary Katherine Taylor, all of Chattanooga, Tenn.; grandchildren Marsha Hamilton, Debbie Elliot, Jeffery Smith, Gregory Byers, Timmy Byers, Becky Gene Turner, Betsy Joe Short and Amy Singletary; 20 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Kathleen Byers of Covington and Nancy Byers Hodges of Greensboro, N.C.; seven-nieces, Ellen A. Cox; Katherine Dillion Armstrong, Sarah Nehring, Sandra Phelps Smith, Gilda Robertson, Ruby Miller and Christine Brown; 10 nephews, Ray Crawford, Preston Stinespring, Harvey Stinespring, Dave Byers Jr., Peter Byers, Ray Hodges and Bill Boss. Armentrout, Delbert Lee OBIT: May 6, 1975, D. L. Armentrout: Delbert Lee Armentrout, 59, of 13 East Dolly Ann Drive, died Monday in Veterans’ Administration Hospital, Salem. He was the husband of Pluma Wolfe Armentrout. Mr. Armentrout was born Sept. 14, 1915 in Alleghany County, a son of the late Robert Lee and Rebecca Helmintoller Armentrout. He was a retired employee of the former Industrial Rayon Plant, a member of Covington Baptist Church, and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1033. Other than his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Mary Ann Wooddall, Havelock, NC and Miss Delberta Armentrout, at home; three brothers, Hubert Armentrout, Ansted, WV, Frank Armentrout and Roscoe Armentrout, both of Covington, four sisters, Mrs. Stella Price, Miss Mildred Armentrout, and Mrs. Irene McCauley, all of Covington and Mrs. Evelyn Smith, Arlington and three grandsons. Armentrout, Emma Sue OBIT: Mrs. Emma Sue Armentrout, 77, died Tuesday afternoon following an extended illness at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank (Lulu) Brown, Route 1, Morris Hill. She was the widow of James William Armentrout who preceded her in death in 1949. Mrs. Armentrout was born March 8, 1902, in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Jacob L. Armontrout and Matilda Elizabeth Stone Armontrout. She had been a resident of this community for most of her life and was a retired practical nurse. Other than Mrs. Brown, she is survived by two other daughters, Mrs. Charles G. (Lucille) Sims, Dayton, Ohio, and Mrs. Dewey (Janutia Hoke, Pennington Gap; four sons, Jack Louis Armentrout, and Jesse Allen Armentrout, both of Staunton; Bobby Watkins Armentrout, Lombard, IL., and David Lyle Armentrout, Natural Well; two brothers, Joe Bob Armontrout and Luther Armontrout, both of Route 3, Covington; two sisters, Mrs. Minnie A. Weese, Covington and Mrs. Jane A. Stevenson, Columbus, Ohio, 19 grandchildren and 22 great- grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at the graveside in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Friday, 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. C. Stevens Cathcart and the Rev. Howard Merrill officiating. Armentrout, James Robert OBIT: James Robert “Daddy Bob” Armentrout, 96, of 309 Treetop Rd., died Wednesday, April 14, 1999 at the Springs Nursing Center in Hot Springs. He was born April 9, 1903 in Alleghany County a son of the late James Michael and Mary Humphries Armentrout. Mr. Armentrout retired in 1967 from Westvaco Corp. as a millwright mechanic. He was a member of the Falling Springs Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and member of the former Men’s Bible Class. He was a member of the Falling Springs Ruritan Club. Following retirement from Westvaco, Daddy Bob volunteered at the Sheltered Workshop in Covington and, for a number of years, he was a parts delivery man for Woody’s Auto Parts. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Kelley Armentrout, in 1989; two sons, Bobby Armentrout and Teddy Armentrout; and by a brother and three sisters. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Winston and Ruth Armentrout of Hot Springs and Norris and Vicky Armentrout of Lancaster; two granddaughters and spouses, ,Bridgett and Matt Edwards of Fisherville and Robin and Jeff Clinebell of Staunton; three great-granddaughters, Amanda Clinebell, Amber Clinebell, and Erika Clinebell, all of Staunton; and several nieces and nephews. He was the husband of Muriel Carter Armentrout. He was born February 23, 1907 in Alleghany County, a son of the late George William Armentrout and Lettie Matheny Armentrout. Mr. Armentrout was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. He was a 1924 graduate of Covington High School. His hobbies included crossword puzzles, gardening and hunting. He was a retired farmer and had served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Miss Loretta Lynn Armentrout of Grove City, Ohio; three sisters, Mrs.Nettie A. Rickett and Mrs. Mary Emma Liptrap, both of Covington, and Miss Helen Virginia Armentrout of Low Moor; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Armentrout was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Lola Mae Parker in 1981. A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. Armentrout, Robert Lee OBIT: Last Services For Mr. Armentrout to be held tomorrow-funeral services for Mr. Robert Lee Armentrout, lifelong resident and well known farmer of Alleghany County who succumbed to an alleged self-inflicted wound died in Covington General Hospital yesterday afternoon, will be held at Union Chapel on Potts Creek at 2:30 o’clock Saturday afternoon. Rev. Harry S. Coffey, pastor of Granbery Memorial Church will conduct the services and interment will be made in the Armentrout Cemetery. Mr. Armentrout was 56 years old and was the son of John Samuel and Frances Armentrout. He was a member of Pennell Chapel and was also a member of I.O.O.F. and the A.M.O.S. Lodges. Surviving are his widow and children, six sons and four daughters: Frank Delbert and Hubert of Covington, Richard of Hope, WV, Clarence, Roscoe and Irene at home; Mrs. Mildred Lockhart, Mrs. Stella Barnett and Mrs. Evelyn Campbell, all of Covington. Armentrout, Roscoe Madison OBIT: Roscoe Madison Armentrout, 78, of 404 W. Indian Valley Rd., died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, at Alleghany Regional Hospital. Mr. Armentrout was born July 20,1920, in Alleghany County, a son of the late Robert Lee and Rebecca Ann Helmintoller Armentrout. He retired in 1983 as a carpenter after 42 years with Westvaco Corp. in Covington. He was a member of Local 675, United Paperworkers International Union, and was secretary for the Westvaco Credit Union. Mr. Armentrout was currently secretary for the Westvaco Retirees Association. For most of his adult life, he enjoyed coin collecting and was a member of the former Alleghany Coin Club. Mr. Armentrout was a member and past deacon of First Christian Church, were he served as secretary of the Men’s Sunday School Class for many years. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Pauline Price Armentrout of Covington; his daughter and son in law, Marie and Randy Simpson of Edgewater, Md.; two granddaughters, Paula C. Simpson of Arlington; Rebecca A. Simpson of Rochester, N.Y.; four sisters, Mrs. Elbert (Stella) Price, Miss Mildred Armentrout and Mrs. William (Irene) McCauley, all of Covington; Mrs. Evelyn Morrison of Lusby, Md., and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Armentrout was preceded in death by five brothers A funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Gilliland officiating. OBIT: Mrs. Stella Armentrout Price, 93, of 2128 Dressler Drive, died early Tuesday morning, June 20, 2000 at Shenandoah Manor Nursing Home. She was the wife of Elbert Price. She was born March 28, 1907, a daughter of the late Robert Lee Armentrout and Rebecca Ann Helmentoler Armentrout. Mrs. Price was employed by the Covington Weaving Company and retired from the Boys’ Home. She was also the care taker of area children. She had been a faithful and continuous member of the First Christian Church since 1924. She was a member of the Lady’s Bible Class. Other than her husband of 60 years, Elbert, Mrs. Price is survived by three sisters, Mildred Armentrout and Irene McCauley, both of Covington, and Evelyn Morrison of Solomons, Md. Also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by six brothers, Clarence, Richard, Roscoe, Frank, Delbert and Hubert Armentrout. A funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at First Christian Church with the Rev Bill Gilliland officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park. Armontrout, Gilbert Garfield OBIT: Mr. Gilbert Garfield Armontrout, aged 85 years, of Madison, Missouri, died Wednesday, June 11, at Audrian Medical Center in Mexico. He had been a patient there for three weeks. Born near Paint Bank, VA May 29, 1890, he was the son of Andrew Washington Lafayette and Emma Bostic Armontrout. He later moved with his family to Missouri. He was married Sept. 24, 1911 to Bessie Eadle Simpson, who died Feb.15, 1952. Mr. Armontrout is survived by two brothers, Frank Armontrout of Madison, and Russell Armontrout of Centralia, and by one sister, Mrs. Ben (Margaret) Wilson of Centralia, and several nephews and nieces. One sister, Mrs. W. E. (Cora) Huffman, preceded him in death. Relatives in Monroe County include Mrs. J. O. Echols, Layman Reynolds, Mason and Vernon Atkins. Services were conducted on June 14, at Meador and Son Funeral Chapel, Centralia, MO, by Rev Seal Bradford and Rev. John Foster. Interment followed in the City of Centralia Cemetery. Arrington, Charles Woodrow OBIT: 18 Dec 1989-Charles Woodrow “Bud” Arrington, Jr., 50, of Route 1, Ogles Creek, died Saturday. He was born June 1, 1939, in Alleghany County, a son of the late Charles W. and Ella McAllister Arrington. He was employed as a Machinist at Acadia Polymers, Inc at Iron Gate. He was a member of the Hokes Chapel United Methodist Church, where he served as Doorkeeper of the church and a member of the Hokes Chapel Mens’ Club. Mr. Arrington was an active volunteer in the Alleghany Highlands Literacy Program through the TAP Office in Covington, where he served as an inspiration to others by his accomplishments. He had also authored a short story which was published in the Virginian Review. He is survived by his wife, Jean Harvey Arrington of Route 1, Ogles Creek; two sons, Charles Samuel Arrington and C. J. Matheny, of Route 1, Ogles Creek; four daughters, Mrs. Don (Karen) McMeekon of Route 1, Callaghan; Miss Debbie Lynn Arrington at home; Mrs. Douglas (Linda) Cox of Charlotte, NC; Mrs. James (Betty) Hawkins of Route 4, Covington; seven grandchildren, Mark A. Rickett, Sr., who preceded her in death in 1983. Mrs. Rickett was born March 18, 1909, in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late William Jackson Arrington and Mary Ida Craft Arrington. She was a member of Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church and the Pines Garden Club. Mrs. Rickett was formerly employed by the Industrial Rayon and Westvaco during World War II, and for many years, she was employed at the cafeteria of the former Jeter School and Jeter-Watson Elementary School. Surviving are two sons, Leonard C. Rickett Jr. of Covington; Edgar Ray Rickett of Covington; two daughters, Mrs. William (Nancy) Plott of Covington; Mrs. Paul B. (Charlotte) Wilmer of College Station, Texas; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Rickett was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters. Arritt, Alvin Miller OBIT: Spotsylvania-2 April 1991-Alvin Miller Arritt, Jr., 78, of Spotsylvania, died Monday at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredricksburg. He was born August 6, 1912 at McHenry in Spotsylvania County, a son of the late Dr. and Mrs. A. M. Arritt. Having attended Spotsylvania Schools, he graduated from Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham. Later Mr. Arritt attended the University of Virginia and Hampton-Sydney College. Following his marriage to the former Alma Foster in 1938, they have resided in the Partlow area of Spotsylvania since that time. While operating Aspenwall Farm, Mr. Arritt was active in the Virginia Farm Bureau and the Southern States Cooperative while owning a general store near Lake Anna. An elected official, Mr. Arritt represented Berkley District on the Spotsylvania Board of Supervisors from 1941 to 1963. During his tenure he served several times as chairman. He served on the board of directors of the Rappahannock and the Virginia Electric cooperative from 1964-1964. During that time he was president of the Virginia Electric Cooperative Association, encompassing the entire state in 1975-1977. For some 13 years, he served as director on the board of the Spotsylvania Courthouse Branch, United Virginia Bank, which is now Crestar Bank Mr. Arritt was a charter member and was instrumental in the organization of the Partlow Puritan Club, Spotsylvania Volunteer Fire Department, Station 3, and one of the early members of the Spotsylvania Rescue Squad. He was recognized as a life member in both the fire department and the rescue squad. Just recently, Mr. Arritt was awarded “Fireman of the Year” by Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 10546. As a member of Waller’s Baptist Church he assumed many offices, including deacon, trustee, Sunday School teacher and officer, and moderator of the Goshen Baptist Association. He is survived by his wife, Alma F. Arritt of Spotsylvania; a son, a Miller Arritt, III, of Spotsylvania; one daughter, Mrs. Joyce A. Laine of Virginia Beach; and eight grandchildren. The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Waller’s Baptist Church in Partlow. The Rev. S. Renalds and the Rev. Ernest Cornwell will officiate. Arritt, Arlie Carl OBIT: Arlie Carl Arritt, 86, 220 E. Gray Street, died Sunday evening in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salem, following an extended illness. He was the husband of Catherine Rea (Kitty) Arritt. Mr. Arritt was born July 30, 1919 in Covington, son of the late Albert Carl Arritt and Husie Long Arritt and had been a resident of this community his entire life. He was a direct descendant of John Arritt, one of the first settlers of Alleghany County. He was a member of Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church, a member of the Walter Lambuth Bible Class and was a former member of the Administrative Board of the church. He was a recipient of the United Daughters of the Confederacy Cross of Military Service. Mr. Arritt was a supervisor at Westvaco prior to his retirement in 1980 and was a lieutenant in the U. S. Army Air Corps in World War II where he was a navaigator bombardier. Other than his wife, he is survived by a son, Lt. Commander James Carl Arritt of Woodbridge; a brother, James Paul Arritt of Lansing, Mich.; and two grandchildren. He had been a resident of Covington his entire life, was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and a member of Loyal Order of the Moose Chapter 610. He was employed in the Public Works Department of Alleghany County. Surviving, besides his mother and father, are a son, James A. Mr. Arritt was a native of Alleghany County, the son of the late John M. and Elizabeth Persinger Arritt. He had resided in Oak Hill for the past 30 years where he engaged in the mercantile business. He was born February 1, 1937 in Covington, a son of the late Earnest H. Arritt and Mary Elizabeth Hamilton Arritt. Mr. Arritt was retired from the U. S. Navy with 20 years service and for the last 15 years, he was employed as a systems analyst for Vepco. He was a a member of Zion United Methodist Church; a member of Acca Shriners Temple of Richmond; a member of Covington Masonic Lodge No. 171, A. F. and A. M.; Commander No. 1, Knights Templar of Fredericksburg; Pascagoula Masonic Lodge No. 155, Pascagoula, Miss; and of the Loyal Order of the Moose No. 1655 of Fredericksburg. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jan Arritt of Spotsylvania; two sons, Timothy P. Arritt of Smiths, Ala. and Raymond L. Arritt of Fredericksburg; two daughters, Mrs. Sammie Long of Greenwood, Miss. and Mrs. Melinda Bradman of Orange County; one brother, Noland P. Arritt of McClean; and three grandchildren. The funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 4 p.m. from the chapel of Mullins and Thompson Funeral Home in Fredericksburg with the Rev. John R. Esaias Jr. officiating. Interment will be made Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends this evening from 7:00 to 8:00 at the funeral home. Mr. Arritt was born August 28, 1898 in Alleghany County, a son of the late Daniel F. and Emma Riddleberger Arritt. He retired in 1963 as a millwright foreman with Westvaco Inc. after 37 years with the company. Arritt, George Estell OBIT: FORMER CHIEF GEORGE ARRITT DIES AT 69: George Estel Arritt, 69, retired police chief of Covington, died Saturday, July 4, at 6 p.m. in Alleghany Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient for several days. He was born March 7, 1890, in Alleghany County, the son of the late John Marion and Amanda Callie Ellison Arritt, and had spent his entire life in Alleghany and Covington. He retired from the Covington Police Department, Jan. 1, 1956, after serving 28 years, 25 of which were as chief. Prior to that he had been employed at the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company. He was a member of Granbery Memorial Methodist Church, and the Walter Lambuth Bible Class. He was born September 27, 1912 in Alleghany County, a son of the late William Edward Arritt and Bertie Reynolds Arritt Richmond. Mr. Arritt was a former member of the Church of God of Prophecy. He had been a resident of this area most of his life and was a retired laborer with a box plant in Roanoke. Arritt, Carl (Jimmy) OBIT: Carl (Jimmy) Arritt, 55, of 12235 Cinnamon St., Woodbridge, died Friday, August 7, 1998, at Potomac Hospital. He was the husband of Gaye Craft Arritt. Mr. Arritt was born Nov. 1, 1942, in Covington, a son of Catherine Rea Arritt Fitzgerald and the late Arlie Carl Arritt. He was a 1960 graduate of Covington High School and he received a bachelor of arts degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University. in Blacksburg. Mr. Arritt did graduate work at the University of North Carolina and held a masters degree in management from the Regent University School of Business in Virginia Beach. Mr. Arritt was retired as a lieutenant commander for the U.S. Coast Guard. During his tour of duty with the Coast Guard, he served as an executive officer aboard the cutter Ingham with visits to Vietnam, France, Holland, Finland and other Western European nations. His ship was active during the Cuban refugee crisis and had other drug enforcement duties. Mr. Arritt retired with 20 years service. Since his retirement from the Coast Guard, he served as an historical interpreter at Mount Vernon. He had resided in oodbridge since 1985 and was a former resident of Covington, Washington and other duty stations around the country. Mr. Arritt was a member of Manassas Assembly of God Church, the Prince William County Christian Coalition, the Northern Virginia Writer’s Association and the Retired Officers’ Association. In addition to his wife, Gaye Craft Arritt, he is survived by two sons, James Michael Arritt of Woodbridge; Matthew Carl Arritt and wife, Amy, of Woodbridge; his mother, Catherine Rea Arritt Fitzgerald of Covington; his stepfather, Lemuel W. Fitzgerald, Sr. of Covington, two uncles, Jim Arritt of Lansing, Mich.; Pete Rea of Danville and a number of cousins. He was the husband of the late Eula Mae Carter Arritt who preceded him in death in He was born July 12, 1910 in the Potts Creek area of Alleghany County, a son of the late William Edward Arritt and Bertie Reynolds Arritt Richmond. Mr. Arritt was employed by Westvaco Corp. as a machinist and retired in 1975 with 49 years of service. During World War II, he worked under a defense contract making shell casings which were manufactured at Westvaco. He is survived by a son, Berlyn L. Wright, West Farmington, Ohio; 44 other grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; her stepmother, Bertie Richmond, Clifton Forge; two half brothers, Lacy Arritt, Covington and Gomer Arritt, Roanoke; two half sisters, Bertie Fay Landis, Route 2, Hot Springs and Margie Nuckols, Staunton. She was preceded in death by a son, Everett Wright, in 1968. The funeral will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with Rev. Wilma Bland officiating. Interment will be in Lone Star Cemetery.

OBIT: Tara Arritt, Roanoke: Infant Tara Diane Arritt of Roanoke died Thursday in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was born in Roanoke October 14, 1985, the daughter of Robert Boone Arritt, Jr. and Nancy Campbell Arritt of Route 11, Roanoke. Surviving other than her parents are her paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Arritt, Sr., Covington; maternal grandparents Junior W. Campbell of Covington and Mrs. Marion Williams, Wesgate. A graveside service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Central Advent Christian Cemetery with Rev. David Kirk officiating.
